Bucolic with Elements of Modernity

VERMONT ART GUIDE #5 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Susan Abbott
Marshfield

Susan Abbott’s bright, bold paintings eschew nostalgia while embracing romantic views of the land. When she paints bucolic Vermont, she is unafraid to include elements of modernity: a traffic light dangling in an intersection or a light post interrupting a lake view.

Abbott is one of sixteen artists featured in the exhibition, “Connection: the Art of Coming Together”, which is on view June 5th through October 6th, 2017, at the Vermont Arts Council Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier and forever in print in Vermont Art Guide #5.

Susan Abbott graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA and MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she studied under renowned artists Israel Hershberg and Grace Hartigan. She has worked as a professional artist since that time, exhibiting in galleries and museums around the country. Her paintings are represented in numerous corporate and individual collections, and have been featured widely in national art publications and media including the Oprah Winfrey Show. She has been the recipient of grants from the Vermont and Maryland Arts Councils, and of numerous private and public painting commissions. In Vermont, her landscape paintings were included in the state-wide projects “The Art of Action” and “Eyes on the Land”. Susan Abbott is also a popular teacher of art workshops in France, Italy, the Bahamas, India and sites around the United States. She lives in Marshfield.

ABOUT THE CONNECTION EXHIBITION
The exhibition, “Connection: the Art of Coming Together”, presents a survey of contemporary Vermont art organized by artist networks rather than aesthetics or media. As an experiment, curator Ric Kasini Kadour, editor and publisher of Vermont Art Guide, asked four artists or art professionals from different corners of the state to submit the name of an artist they feel is part of their community or network. He then went to those people and so on until he had enough people to fill the exhibition. The results of this experiment, as well as Kadour’s extensive commentary on the artists’ relationships and artwork, are on view June 5th through October 6th at the Vermont Arts Council Spotlight Gallery in Montpelier. A version of the exhibition appears in print in Vermont Art Guide #5.
