The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland<\/h2>\n

In Vermont Art Guide #2<\/em>, Daphne Cybele Van Schaick visits a historic quarry site in West Rutland that is a now Vermont Carving Studio and Sculpture Center. She writes, “The quarry company buildings were eventually purchased by the Carving Studio and renovated to add electricity and water. These original quarry buildings now serve as workshop, gallery, and office space. Large-scale sculptures are on display throughout the grounds and in the indoor gallery and workshop spaces, as well carved right into the old quarry walls. There is a sense of renewal on this once silent quarry site. This is a remarkable place, where artists and interns can develop and display their work and where the public sign up for workshops in stained glass, silversmithing, pulp paper sculpture, bronze casting, and stone sculpture.”<\/p>\n

Carving Studio & Sculpture Center<\/strong>
\nThe gallery and workshop room shows wood and stone-carved sculpture as well as large photographs of the quarry. The small field littered with large marble, granite, and metal sculpture across from the main building makes for a great picnic spot.
