Katharine Montstream: “After Hours-The Queen City; Dusk to Dawn”

“After Hours-The Queen City; Dusk to Dawn” is an exhibit of original watercolors by Burlington artist Katharine Montstream. This year marks 25 years of coloring for a living for Katharine and, as a result, she has scheduled several exhibits of her work with Frog Hollow that focus on the unique look of our beloved city.

I love the simplicity of the night time palette. Tonality becomes the focus as colors fade. Gradations of grays, blues, and green tell the story of the Burlington skyline and its surrounding landscape. Edges of buildings and trees are hidden and come and go at night. Views from Oakledge Park, the lake and from up on the hill all give a different perspective to the city I love.

She also took classes at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford. After a degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado, Katharine studied art with Larry Goldsmith of Fairfax, Vermont for seventeen years and she credits him for exposing her to an expressive way of painting.
