About Barbara Waters:
My life does not follow a single developmental line, nor does my work. How could it when I am a plural person in a plural society in a context of global community on this beautiful planet Earth? As an artist and as a human being, I am constantly re-envisioning and re-creating the mosaic of my spiritual, intellectual, emotional, environmental, aesthetic, social and socio-political experience. Any particular cluster of my work is likely to emphasize the aspect of my experience which was in my personal foreground at the time.
At some times, I have found myself inspired by the simplicity and eloquence of the spare style of various Oriental traditions. I have no formal training in ink painting, but was delighted to learn of a style in which there are three elements: a horizontal stroke, an upward movement, and a downward movement. Several of these experiments hang .
I am frequently inspired by landscape, both imaginary and remembered, usually choosing the scale of the scenes which simplify the elements of line and form in the subject.
I hope that my particular translation of personal experience into art sheds light on someone’s path, that the explorer of my art experiences something new or rediscovers wisdom deeply known, but previously unacknowledged.
