She lives in Craftsbury, Vermont.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Julia Shipley\u2019s reading for Exposed is inspired by short pieces from her project: <em>Ten Sabbaths: Drawing on Stillness<\/em>, created during a Habitat for Artists residency. During ten consecutive Sundays throughout summer and fall 2011, she\u2019s been exploring \u201cclearings&#8221;, the inherent and necessary pauses within the labors of farming, and creating pieces of writing suitable for those restive interstices. Each of these five \u201cmeadow-sized\u201d stories is designed to be read in the length of time it takes to milk a cow (by machine), to rest draft horses between plowing furrows, or to pause after unloading a hay cart of square bales (approximately 5-8 minutes).<\/p>\n<p>Julia Shipley, a 2010-2011 Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant recipient, is completing a manuscript of braided essays about small-scale agriculture. As both a writer and subsistence farmer she\u2019s interested in the overlap and interplay between these two fields. Her essay \u201cComing into the Barn: Bales of Prose about a Small Dairy Farm\u201d won the Nading Hill Award, and her poetry chapbook,<em> Herd<\/em>, won the Sheltering Pines Press Award. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in<em> Alimentum, Hunger Mountain, Small Farmer\u2019s Journal, Vermont Life, Vermont Magazine, Vermont\u2019s Local Banquet<\/em>, and <em>Whole Terrain<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.writingonthefarm.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.writingonthefarm.com<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>ABOUT EXPOSED<\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the past twenty years, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.helenday.com\/exposed\" target=\"_blank\">Helen Day Art Center<\/a> has hosted an outdoor public art and sculpture exhibition called\u00a0<em>Exposed<\/em> in Stowe, Vermont.\u00a0<em>Exposed<\/em> hosts sculptures, site-specific installations, and participatory work from twenty-three national and international artists. the 2011 edition offers a series of Thursday night events by 12 video artists, writers, performers, and musicians accompany the exhibit. This exhibition and series of events is accompanied by cell phone audio tours, QR codes, walking tour maps, walkabouts, and a catalogue of the exhibit published by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kasinihouse.com\/books\/?p=367\" target=\"_blank\">Kasini House Books<\/a>.
