FROM VERMONT ART GUIDE #5
Matt Neckers’ Mobile Museum Hits the Road
Matt Neckers is the man behind the Vermont Museum of Contemporary Art + Design, a four-by-four foot gallery “at a secret location” in Vermont that became, in his words, “destination for sophisticated art travelers.” Motivated by a desire to expand his audience, Neckers purchased “a dilapidated vintage camper off of Craigslist for $500” and spent a year turning it into the Traveling Mobile Museum. He spent another two years creating hundreds of miniature pieces of art for the Mobile Museum’s various galleries. Vermont Art Guide #5 has a profile of the museum that debuted at City Hall Park in Burlington in August 2017.
Each issue of Vermont Art Guide has over a hundred places to see art around the state. The full-color, printed magazine has artist and venue profiles as well as articles and news about Vermont Art. Our goal is to document and share the state’s incredible art scene.

“In theory, the museum can go anywhere a truck with a camper can go, which is very exciting. When not on the road, the museum will be on permanent display at the Vermont International Museum of Contemporary Art + Design World Headquarters,” he said. “I added the word ‘International’ to the name of the museum, as the mobile museum can now theoretically travel into Canada, provided it can make it through customs.”

The Mobile Museum is making several stops this fall, including the South End Art Hop in Burlington. Spontaneous visits are planned in unexpected places. When not on the road, the museum will be on display at the Vermont International Museum of Contemporary Art & Design World Headquarters in Eden, when renovations are completed in September.
