In a Lush Field Just Past the Bridge

FROM VERMONT ART GUIDE #5

Helen Day’s Annual Exposed Exhibition

In Vermont Art Guide #5, we peek at Helen Day Art Center’s Annual Exposed Exhibition. Now in its 26th year, “Exposed. 2017” features internationally renowned sculptors alongside more than a few local favorites. The long-standing annual outdoor sculpture exhibition in Stowe was initiated by two area artists, Christopher Curtis and John Matusz, to bring the organization’s annual sculpture exhibit into the village of Stowe to “expose” the artwork of both emerging and established artists to a greater public. A dozen sculptures are placed along the Stowe Recreational Path, Main Street, and in front of Helen Day Art Center at School and Pond Streets. A self-guided tour takes approximately an hour to complete and visitors can access audio commentary by calling a phone number and entering a site location.

Each issue of Vermont Art Guide has over a hundred places to see art around the state. The full-color, printed magazine has artist and venue profiles as well as articles and news about Vermont Art. Our goal is to document and share the state’s incredible art scene.

Ted Ceraldi’s Debate (image) reflects the artist’s interest in poetry, prose, and science. Two half spheres on tripods point away from each other. An orange ball stands as a point between them. Ceraldi wrote of his sculpture, “The work for the most part is figurative. The narrative of each abstract piece, therefore, becomes familiar yet elusive to the observer.” The viewer is left to complete the story, to ponder both what the artist means, but also what it means that these objects stand in a lush field just past the bridge over the Little River as the Green Mountains stand in the distance.
