February’s First Friday in Vermont

On Friday, February 3rd, Brattleboro, Montpelier, and Burlington’s art venues stay open late to welcome art lovers as part of monthly art celebrations.

First Friday Art

First Friday Art is a monthly, community-wide event where dozens of art venues across Burlington host openings, exhibitions, and happenings. The event is free and open to anyone. Most venues are open from 5-8PM, but some are open earlier or later. Art Map Burlington is the official guide to First Friday Art, pick up your copy around town.

SPACE Gallery and the Vermont Art Guide open “Art of Winter”, a survey of art by Vermont artists on the theme of winter, curated by SPACE Gallery director Christy Mitchell and Ric Kasini Kadour, editor and publisher of the Vermont Art Guide. Frog Hollow invites you to participate in their interactive exhibit, “The Wall of Love”, which asks the question, “What does Love mean to you?” Eco-Artist Anne Cummings will be present at the opening of her show of art made from recycled materials in “Renewal” at the Gallery at Main Street Landing. At VCAM/RETN Art Space, “The Elements” is work by Kristin Richland, Elizabeth Cleary, and Gwendolyn Evans. MONTPELIER

Art Walk

Downtown Montpelier showcases work by Central Vermont artists at over 20 venues. Pick up a guide book at any of the participating venues. Montpelier Alive produces the Montpelier Art Walk.

At the Vermont Supreme Court, Lark Upson’s “Portraits and a Call to Action” feature oil portraits of humans and animals, with four monumental canvases focusing on animals near extinction. In the Governor’s Gallery in the Pavilion Building (photo ID required), “From Far Away” presents Pawlet photographer Stephen M. Schaub’s innovative photographs, which are printed on a variety of unexpected materials. At the Vermont Arts Council’s Spotlight Gallery “…and the journey continues…” is mixed media works by Northeast Kingdom artist Kathy Stark, representing the progression of her work from the 1980s to the present. Gallery Walk

Brattleboro’s monthly First Friday celebration of the arts offers 30 to 40 exhibit openings at galleries, eateries, and other venues in the downtown and a few satellite locations nearby. Many offer meet-the-artist receptions, some with refreshments, and a few present live music. Visit the Walk website for a map and complete listings with examples of the art on display as well as feature articles for the month; a printed version of the Walk guide is available at all venues, a number of other downtown locations, the I-91 Welcome Center, and many local lodging options. Official Walk hours are 5:30 to 8:30, but many venues are open earlier, and a few remain open later. Most exhibits run all month long; see listings for more details and venue contact information.

The Vermont Center for Photography presents work by photographer Andrew Frost and offers an earnest look at the Northeast Kingdom through the lens of his 8×10 camera. “Spring Visions” is a group show of artists represented by Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts. The Brattleboro Museum and Art Center offers free admission during the Gallery Walk. There are five exhibitions currently on display. The two newest exhibitions are Carolyn Enz Hack’s immersive installation Change Your Mind and the showcase of artists working in photography, digital and video art, Open Call NXNE 2017.
