ART EVENT

Phil Acimovic, Sound Artist
at Cold Hollow Sculpture Park
in Enosburg Falls
August 25, 2018, 2PM

Cold Hollow Sculpture Park welcomes its first Artist-in-Residence, sound artist Phil Acimovic of Davis, California. As a composer, a performer of Javanese Gamelan music, and a sound installation artist who has lived in Central Java, Acimovic says, “Even one small sound can turn into a whole world if you listen closely enough.”

The 36-year-old Acimovic just completed his Ph.D. in Music at the University of California, Davis. In April-May 2018, he organized and produced a Gamelan tour of the U.S., where he performed with his Javanese teachers. He writes “contemporary classical” compositions and creates sound installations, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. In choosing Acimovic for this first residency, David and Sarah Stromeyer were interested in “an artist experienced and developed enough to know what he/she is about, who would have a focus for the two weeks here, and whose work would benefit from this creative, rural setting.” Also of interest is are these influences on him and his work: “How he’s using his time here, the decisions he’s made that support his work–very little internet, no car, evening walks, working around David’s studio sounds, time with us and solitude, the big change from California dryness to lush, green Vermont, being out of his familiar habits and territories.”

Acimovic presents the fruits of his labor at the Sculpture Park by taking attendees on a “sound-walk”, sharing his compositions, and describing poly-temporal music in which different rates of time occur at once.

This performance is part of Cold Hollow Sculpture Park’s 2018 theme, “Voyage and Adventure: pushing and crossing boundaries”. Other events this season include: Noted poet and nature writer Alison Hawthorne Deming in interview with David Stromeyer on Saturday, September 8 at 2PM. Also on September 8, at the Meeting House on the Green in East Fairfield at 7PM is a performance by the Austin Piazzolla Quintet. On Saturday, October 6, 2PM, Orly Yadin, filmmaker and Executive Director of the Vermont International Film Foundation, will screen several short films and lead a discussion.
