Brown Lumps of Clay
& a Burned Sweater

FROM VERMONT ART GUIDE #5

Sherry Corbin & the Art of Raku
at Grand Isle Art Works

Grand Isle Art Works gallery is a quaint 1797 Vermont farmhouse in the Champlain Islands. Within its walls, you will find the creative work of at least 75 Vermont artisans and artists. The walls virtually explode with colorful watercolors, paintings on silk, and photographs. Three dimensional work includes wood turned bowls, wood carvings, sculpture, pottery and fiber arts. Although all of the artists are from Vermont, some make their home in the Champlain Islands. One of them is Sherry Corbin, who has had her work in the gallery since its inception in 2010. Vermont Art Guide #5 has a profile of this fascinating artist.

Each issue of Vermont Art Guide has over a hundred places to see art around the state. The full-color, printed magazine has artist and venue profiles as well as articles and news about Vermont Art. Our goal is to document and share the state’s incredible art scene.

Her first experience with Raku in college left her seriously underwhelmed. She thought that the end results of a Raku firing were small brown lumps of clay and a burned sweater. The second time around, she found that she was so wrong.

Corbin finds Raku images in the woods, along roadsides, and in her mind—a chickadee, a crow, a fish or a dream. She thinks Raku. She loves how the wild creatures interact with the human made landscape. A bird on a fence or sign post always draws her attention and the image is instantly transposed into Raku.
