Fran Bull: In Flanders Fields
June 10-July 30, 2016

Fran Bull’s In Flanders Fields is a multi-media installation, including textiles, etchings, sculpture, and text, that reflects on the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” (1915) by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, and Bull’s effort to add her “’silent scream to the chorus of those for whom war is anathema”.

The multi-layered exhibit speaks to varying experiences and effects of war. “The Wall of Fallen Ones” features dozens of faces encased square pine boxes, a vertical “field” of the lives lost to war. Eighteen sculptures of women create “Lysistrata and her Circle”, inspired by Aristophanes’ play, in which Greek women refuse to have sex with their husbands until a peace treaty is signed to end the Peloponnesian Wars.

In addition to the opening reception, there three events related to this installation. On Friday, June 24, 6-7PM, is a performance of Impressions: A Dance Piece, choreographed by Ilene Blackman. Vermont’s Poet Laureate, Chard deNiord, gives a poetic reading on Friday, July 8, 7-8PM. And on Tuesday, July 19, Fran Bull presents an artist talk providing in-depth insight into her installation, In Flanders Fields.
