Music, Canvas & Skin: Katlin Parenteau on the Cover of Vermont Art Guide #6
A tattoo by Katlin Parenteau is on the cover of Vermont Art Guide #6. Born and raised in Vermont, Parenteau credits her art teachers, Rita Braun and Pat Sanders at North Country Union High School in Newport, as the reason she became an artist. Her first show was at age fifteen in a small cafe in Stanstead, Quebec where the mother of her then-boyfriend knew the owner. She sold two drawings. She studied art at New Hampshire Institute of Art and at Community College of Vermont in Winooski, where she dabbled in Burlington’s art scene by exhibiting work at SPACE Gallery, RL Photo, Red Square and designing t-shirts for Vermont Organics and the 802 Boys.

“My expressionistic style had a few hippie followers and when I moved out of Burlington back to beloved Jay Peak, I found myself doing a lot of live painting with bands,” said Parenteau. “It was an amazing time to simultaneously experience being an artist and connecting with music whole translating it on my canvas.” Parenteau’s woodworker friend Brian came up with the idea of a watercolor-style tattoo and, in true Vermont fashion, bartered a handcrafted wood box made with trees from his home in the Northeast Kingdom for the tattoo work. “He was born and raised here in Vermont and is newly married with a little boy of his own. He got a tattoo to commemorate his life, past and future that he is building,” said Parenteau. In addition to tattoos, Parenteau makes drawings and paintings, which she shows at her tattoo shop and gallery in Newport.
